The adder can be identified by the "zig-zag" pattern that runs continuously over its back and has a dark color. In addition, there is a line of dark blotches running along either side. The background color shifts from a gray-white to hues of brown or copper in the female, whereas the male has a gray-white background. Young adders have markings that are darker brown and might be copper, light brown, or reddish in color. There are several regions that are home to completely black adders. The average length of an adder is about 60 centimeters, and they have a very stocky appearance.

In the months of April and May, mating takes place, and instead of laying shelled eggs, female adders incubate their eggs inside after mating (which the grass snake does). August or September is the time of year when adders give birth to anything from six to twenty live young. The majority of an adder's diet consists of lizards and rodents of a smaller size. They emerge from their hibernation anywhere between the months of October and February, depending on the climate of the area. The average lifespan of an adder is between 5 and 10 years. Birds such as crows and buzzards are among their primary enemies and predators
