The common garter snake is a snake that ranges in length from 18 to 26 inches and has a coloration that is highly diverse. The common pattern consists of three light stripes that run lengthwise along the body of the animal against a backdrop that is brown, tan, or olive. There is a possibility that the red or orange color will peek through on the sides. A checkered pattern can be seen on the skin of some common garter snakes. Frequently, there are two rows of black dots over the belly.

Although they may be found in a broad variety of environments, common garter snakes are typically found in moist, open areas that are covered with grass. Old fields, the margins of streams or ponds, the edges of woods, and the margins of wetland areas are common places where you can find them.
